... in Naxos we saw dozens of figures in the museums that were, apparently, votive offerings found in graves ... some of them, particularly the heads, were stunningly graceful in their simplicity ... some of them can be seen on the website for the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York
on returning home I decided to try and replicate one of these heads but very soon it started to take on a life of its own - as many of my clay models do - and it finally materialised as a Cycladic mask fitted tightly on to a head
